Conglomerates ready to start Naia expansion

A consortium of seven conglomerates said it is ready to start the rehabilitation and expansion of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport once it obtains the green light from the government.
“We are ready to start construction right after we get the notice to proceed and deliver the first phase of expanding Naia’s capacity by 2020″, Naia Consortium spokesman Jimbo Reverente said.
The consortium’s members are Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc., AC Infrastructure Holdings Corp., Alliance Global Group Inc., AEDC, Filinvest Development Corp., JG Summit Holdings Inc. and Metro Pacific Investments Corp.
The consortium committed to spend P106 billion over the 15-year concession.
Reverente said the consortium could act quickly because it already had the design, the funds, the technical partner (Changi Airport) and the people to make Naia what it should be.
The airport’s four terminals handle far more passengers than they were built for. They have capacity for 31 million passengers per year but handled 42 million last year. This is expected to increase to around 47 million by 2020.
The proposal promises to have a Naia capacity to match that 2020 projection and then bring its capacity up to 65 million by 2022.

The Naia Consortium proposed to expand and interconnect the existing terminals of Naia, upgrade airside facilities and develop commercial facilities to increase airline and airport efficiencies, enhance passenger comfort and experience and improve public perception of Naia as the country’s premier international gateway.

Montenegro to put airports up for concession

The Montenegrin government has adopted plans to put its two international airports in Podgorica and Tivat up for concession. A public call for the expression of interest is expected to be issued soon. The Montenegrin Minister for Transportation and Maritime Affairs, Osman Nurković, said the two airports will be offered up for a concession ranging between 25 and thirty years. Turkey’s TAV Airports Holding, which has become a global brand in airport construction projects and operations, held talks with Mr Nurković on two different occasions late last year in order to examine suitable concession models.

The Prime Minister of Montenegro, Duško Marković, previously said, «Several well established companies have already shown serious interest for the airports. The concession is vital in order for Tivat Airport to follow through with its plans to build a new passenger terminal, extend its runway and overhaul its taxiways». Last year, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was set to approve a fifty million euro loan for the development of Tivat Airport, however, it requested for the Montenegrin government to guarantee the airport would remain in state hands over a period of ten years following the completion of the expansion project. Mr Marković’s administration was unable to agree to such terms.

Montenegro’s opposition parties have slammed the government’s concession plans, noting that operator Airports of Montenegro is one of the country’s most profitable public enterprises. It recorded profit before tax of 5.2 million euros last year. Montenegro’s two airports handled a combined total of 1.3 million passengers during the January – July period. Last month alone, the two welcomed 422.220 travellers through their doors. Last Sunday, Tivat Airport broke its 24-hour record by handling 11.233 passengers, while Podgorica saw its busiest day in a decade on July 22 with 7.670 travellers.

First phase of Salt Lake City airport redevelopment hits halfway mark

  • The first phase of the biggest construction project in Utah state history, the $3.6 billion redevelopment of Salt Lake City International Airport, is now 50% complete, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
  • Construction crews have been able to keep most of the work out of passenger and resident view so far, but that should change soon as vertical building and elevated roadway construction progresses. In addition to the roadways, work continues on a new concourse for airplane gates, a new enclosed terminal, a gateway building, a five-story parking garage, a second concourse, motorized walkways and baggage systems. There are currently 1,750 construction workers on the project, with the airport spending approximately $50 million to $70 million each month.
  • The first phase is on track for 2020 completion, at which time the airport’s new south concourse will be the length of seven football fields and will be expanded to the length of 12 football fields after the entire project is built. The second concourse will be about half that long. The second phase includes demolition of the existing airport.
